Artemis is associated with the Moon Goddess Selene, and is often depicted with a crescent moon in her hair. Her brother Apollo, the shining one, is associated with the Sun. Although Artemis was a virgin Goddess she did admire male physical beauty and fell for the mighty hunter Orion. She invited him to go hunting with her. Unfortunately, during the hunt he slept with Eos the Goddess of the dawn. Artemis was so enraged with jealousy that she killed him. One day Actaeon, a mortal, accidently witnessed Artemis and her nymphs undressing and bathing by the river. As a punishment the Goddess changed him into a deer, which caused him to be hunted and killed by his own hounds.. Today Artemis represents the power of the independent female united with purity of beauty. |
